Every ten years, a girl of age who is educated in the arts, possessed of glowing health, and made strong by trials of war is offered to the gods for blessing and good fortune. She becomes the queen regnant, and for ten years she will rule in absolute power over the realm.

This is the story of what comes before she is crowned.

BASICS |

During the offertory, every house (titled) or family (non-titled) must offer at least one daughter in her cusp years (18-25) to the enclave. In the absence of a daughter, the eldest son who is not married must be offered to serve. In the absence of any children, land or property equal in value to the family name must be offered in service to the crown.

All daughters and sons are given forty days to make it to the enclave, after which the gates will close and the sacrificial will begin. The gates will remain closed until a new queen has been chosen. All daughters must fight. All sons must serve. The last daughter left standing, and who has not yielded, will be named queen regnant.

SETTING & GENERAL TIME PERIOD |

Anachronistic early 1930s, Eastern European vibe. Power shift to women, who are the authority within society, while men encounter double standards based on appearances (ugly and/or weak is undesirable). Families may rise based on the strengths of their daughters, but can fall just as quickly by their shame.

GODS & BLESSINGS |

Gods exist in this world. There are three gods: Agamath, who values obedience and loyalty; Hebaron, who values courage and duty; and Adeva, who values wisdom and discipline. During the enclave, the gods gift their offerings with a blessing: small tokens of power to help them in the battle royale. Blessings only enhance what is already present; if a girl is good at hunting, she may be blessed with keen ears or swiftness. If a girl is practical, she may be blessed with a vision or two. Blessings are small and taxing, but when you're fighting for the gods' favor, you take what you can get.

NAMES AND TITLES |

Servants - can be born to the family they serve; adopted by the family; taken in or employed; owned by or indebted to the family. Those born into, adopted, or employed by families may keep their names up until they're chosen for the enclave, at which point they are given a new name. Those owned or in debt are stripped of their given names until they have earned freedom.

House vs Family - Houses have titles, families do not. Houses may include more than one line (e.g. the Starling House is made up of the Starlings, the Finches, and the Swifts), but families are strictly one line pulled together. The name line of a house is always titled, while the rest of the house is rarely so.

Titles - Grant a noble the privilege of protecting another family, for which they are paid in taxes and a portion of the protected family's income. The higher the rank of the title, the higher the taxes and claim.

TERMS & ETC. |

OFFERTORY — The year after a reigning queen's decade, in which she prepares to be relieved of her crown and the future queen is tested.

THE SACRIFICIAL — The event that decides who will be the new queen of the realm. The event takes up to 40 days, usually during the cold months of the year, during which only an offering and their servant may participate until a daughter can be discerned as the last one standing.

ENCLAVE (GROUP) — A community built of the elders of the three faiths, who advise and guide the queen regarding the matters of the realm.

ENCLAVE (PLACE) — An entire province that is reserved strictly for the offertory. Only its caretakers are allowed to enter; not even the queen is permitted to enter during her reign.

THE BLACK WALK — Once a new queen is chosen, the incumbent must walk along a path of blackened earth to a deep tar pit that was once the remnants of a volcano. This is her final resting place. (Sorry, girls.) As long as the walk is finished, a queen's servant may put his queen to rest as mercy, then follow her into the pit.

THE RULES for daughters (offerings) |
— All offered daughters must have passed her letters and worked a year in conscription with her majesty's army.
— All offered daughters must have bled before the offertory has begun.
— The queen must be chosen before the nameday. (Everyone has the same nameday.)
— Servants are weapons. Use them.
— No daughter may fight without honor.
— In a fight, a daughter must yield or die to be released from the enclave.
— A fight is won if a daughter yields, or is fatally wounded and cannot continue. Any daughter who survives without yielding will be ascended to a title.

— No house nor family may offer more than three daughters.

THE RULES for sons (servants) |
— You must serve the daughter who chooses you until your death.
— You must serve her even after her death.
— You must never refuse her.
— You must never touch her without her word.
— You must never speak her name.
— You must never speak your name.
— You are who she makes you to be.
— You must be faithful always, in mind and body.

THE RULES for queens |
— The queen may do what she wishes, in keeping with the realm, until the offertory begins.
— The queen may not interfere with the enclave, the offertory, or the sacrificial.
— The queen may take as many husbands and have as many children as she chooses.
— The queen may not take another woman's daughter to serve her without the enclave's permission.
— Once her successor is chosen, the queen must take the black walk.

Served in Her Majesty's Army for three years in Command, an excellent strategist, but, again, as the only child they needed her at home to be ready to take over the House. It's possible to get under her skin. She doesn't like it. But it's possible. Her blessing allows her to see a person's intent, whether they are lying or telling the truth, and so on.

Served in Her Majesty's Army as a chaplain and medic, and as a result has already seen far too much blood for her liking.

Taken from a rural, Norse-ish tribal mountain community (maybe cultural preserve) when conflict arose with a neighboring house/family, his wife died in battle, his 10 year old daughter was killed in the following raid, and he was taken to be sold as a servant. Played at being useless (hard of hearing, terrible in combat, very bad English - these are all lies), so he'd been sold fairly cheaply to Kadan House, and given to their youngest daughter, Ora. She'd told her family that his given name was the new name she'd assigned to him, so he's very fond of her for letting him keep that, and as she doesn't tattle on him to the family for being useless. Thus, when alone with Ora, outside of the estate, he's acts as capable as he actually is. Which is very. Has vague Dad feels about him. Is still gross sad and grumpy as fuck. More infos here.

Each of his weapons is laced with her own personally derived poison. He carries her with him in every artery opened, every throat slit. He feels when she enters the premises three rooms away; their eyes speak a private language. He would reach into his own chest to pull out his heart and lay it at her feet, were she to ask. She honors her kills; feels more attuned to the woodland spirits and her prey than to her family or other people. She is, without doubt, the other side of the coin to her poised, well-spoken, ballerina twin. While Eisley is a gifted huntress, she was never intended for the sacrifice and has little experience with battling (preying upon) humans; this was her older sister’s role before her untimely death two months ago (the manner of which is still dressed in whispers — a murder staged to appear accidental). Eighteen years prior, a great feud erupted between House Stoker and House Dubhán, and lives and resources were laid waste. House Dubhán ultimately lost the battle and was compelled to offer sons upon sons to House Stoker as continued penance. The family groomed the first son for Ophelia, who was gifted in wit, grace, and cool cunning (a literal lady), and he was assigned the servant name “York”. Eisley had minimal interaction with him, and their recent, sudden compulsion to become a new daughter and servant pairing amidst the controversy over her sister's death has made for a strained and tenuous relationship. Eisley is the opposite of her eldest sister — all things earth and forest and bruised knuckles — nothing of courtesies. She has much to prove in order to take her sister’s place, and is especially behind in close combat.

House Nel are a very old and incredibly respected house, which is why Misha was chosen for the enclave over older sisters. Brought up from a very young age with this knowledge in mind, she has been raised for royalty and as a result somewhat isolated from the rest of the Houses and families. Usually very quiet and reserved, Misha typically is perceived as a much harder person than she actually is. In reality she is very emotional, swinging intensely from great worry to overwhelming happiness with little middle ground. Her blessing was agreed upon by her parents, the gift of empathy. She is able to read another persons true emotions very well, even when they are trying to conceal them. This may contribute to the intensity of her own feelings, as she still struggles to differ between her own experiences and that of another. Chose Cole a few years ago to help guide her towards the end goal of hopefully being chosen as queen regnant, though there is a lot to come before she reaches that stage. idk more later always.

She only served for 3 years and was part of the military's stealth squad. Gathering information and making quick and cleans kills are her specialty. On the outside she is outgoing, air-headed, and weak. However, this is just a clever mask she wears. She is truly calculating, observant, and strong. The only person she trusts is her servant, anyone else is expendable on her poisoned chess board. Her blessing is deception. Lies come easy and are believable and she is able to distract and misdirect attention.

Born of House Dubhán, his true name was stripped when his family 'gifted' him at age 8 to the Stoker house to settle a blood feud. He was trained to be the servant for their oldest daughter and learned everything about her and how to fight in her honor. While he was warm, kind and tried to make the best of a bad situation, his new family only saw him as a reminder of past blood and as a useful tool. His lady was just as cold and uncaring. Displeased with his life he sought out his family for support. However, theirs came with blood. Before the next offertory Dubhán devised a plan to save their son from the fate that awaited him. They killed his Lady and made it appear an accident, thinking that he would be freed. However, the Stokers did not release him, claiming York to be their property now. With his Lady dead and rumors spreading of Dubhán's involvement, he made a panicked move and tried to escape on his own. He was caught and branded with the Stoker crest as a reminder that he is their to do with as they please and gave him to their next daughter, Eisley.

She has something of a reputation around these parts for being a little absent minded (less kind folk call it ditzy) and she's often caught wandering around unaccompanied, but she gets away with far more problem behaviour than Merreiul or Ursula.

The oldest of the Nel siblings, Mara has always been surrounded by a halo of seemingly blessed perfection ever since she was little, excelling in whatever she put her mind to it, displaying the charisma and gravitas of great leaders. Little use she had for those though, as it soon became evident that for all the innate talent she carries, Mara has little to no personal ambition, not to mention what she called "a total incompatibility with men", thus leaving her unmarried so far, although the rumors of her adventures with ladies of diverse walks of life make more than one blush and fan themselves. Handpicked by the current Queen to work as her personal guard among a small, elite group of soldiers, Mara earned the moniker of "The Lady Wolf" by displaying both her regal and deceptively docile behavior and just how quickly she made short work of whatever obstacle got in her way. Mara had no intention to take part of The Offering until Misha decided to participate, moment in which she announced that she would be there to watch over her... and quite probably scare the hell out of everyone else involved.

Dubois House is a dangerously ambitious one, and subjected their only daughter to strict and harsh training to become queen for the sake of their legacy. Juliet has suffered extreme abuse and manipulation both physical and mental, and it has made her numb, cold and calculating as well as extremely codependent on her family, particularly her mother Caroline. She'd make a poor queen because of the damage done to her, but her family is more concerned with winning, and her mother intends to use her daughter as a puppet if/when she takes the throne. As a child, she had interests and friends she kept secret from her family, one such friend was Cooper, an older boy she looked up to (and liked liked), until she was caught at age 13, the strict abuse increased and they threatened to hurt Cooper and her other friends. Since then she has been isolated and slowly broken down and groomed to be a fierce fighter and eventually a puppet queen.

Jack had been born to Benjamin House, a relatively well out family, well respected and highly regarded within the religious circle, but had been discovered at 13 years old to be having a illicit relationship with another boy. Given this brought shame onto the House, he was disowned, considered a criminal, and had an "S" iron branded into his skin, over his heart (guess what it stands for/marks him as). He'd been given to House DuBois (known to be cruel to servants), and to Juliet as her servant/keeper when she was 10, him 3 years older. As she'd still been a sweet, innocent girl then, fairly happy, they got along well, built blanket forts and played.

She'd told him about her crush on Cooper, when that arose, and when Juliet's life took a turn for the abusive, she'd aggressively started pushing him away/lashing out at him. He'd known why, and thus, stayed at her side either way, despite the fact the single person who was nice to him in the House was now shoving him around and sneering at him like all the rest. Where else would he go? This goes on for 4 years, until Juliet is 17 and Jack is 20, and there's a cocktail type party for House members near a lake. Given everyone in the House knows what Jack is, some people start beating up on him, and eventually shove him in the lake. As Jack's hated and shunned by everyone, and had lost the only friend who treated him with some kind of decency, he decides to just sink. Juliet had been watching, and at first does nothing, for fear of repercussion from her family, but once it's apparent he isn't surfacing, she dives in after him, cocktail dress and all. After pulling him out onto the shore and resuscitating him, they sit in the mud and cry and hug a lot.

And then run their asses back to the manor to get her changed and prettied up before anyone sees. Juliet is the only person who'd ever bothered to A, defend him B, save him C, cry for him and D, show him affection since he'd been disowned, he forgives her for the years of abuse, and they form a strange kind of half indifferent and half absolute trust and appreciation sort of relationship. They're both jaded, cold, abused and angry at the world, and Jack decides they're better than this. He poisons two of the people who'd been beating him at the lake, and garrotes one. They decide 'fuck everyone on this earth, let's just be fucking scary', and Jack takes it upon himself to become Juliet's gross silent murder servant. Juliet can't kill more than the people she's told to, but anyone who messes with her generally ends up murdered by Jack, and it's sort of an unspoken thing that they are gross soulless murder team, by the time they get to the Offertory.

Anyone serving Mara needs to be a badass fighter and someone that's not just a hunk, so there's that. She probably won't be super nice to them, mostly because she feels like they would be a glorified babysitter. All the bickering, really.

servant wanted! anyone for aria to sass at and order around and be generally merciless to. bonus points if they fall for each other and she hates it and orders him around even more mercilessly because the way she shows her Love is weird and she gets possessive and weird.

I would love to plot with Aria and Bella! Bella is definitely the sneaky type to gather info. Only issue is she needs to see that teaming up with Aria is worth it. Her blessing might make things interesting between them because Bella's helps her lie and deceive.
